Shared Activities
Brentwood Christian Science Church (BCSC) and Next Generation Fellowship (NGF), while distinct in structure, offer many activities that are hardly distinguishable as “belonging” to one or the other.
Please know that you’re welcome to participate in any of them!

Book Group
From our 2009 beginnings, we have regularly formed groups to read a variety of contemporary books on progressive Christianity and spirituality, as well as fresh perspectives on the Bible and church history. The thrust of each selection is to widen our appreciation and understanding of the spiritual landscape of our society today, to help us re-examine our own “conventional wisdom and practices,” and to enlarge our capacity to have positive faith-based conversations with people from a diversity of backgrounds—including younger generations.
Meetings are held in person and via Zoom. Times vary. Most books are covered in multiple meetings, giving us a chance to dig deeper into their topics.
Movie Night
From time to time, we gather together to watch and discuss a movie with a spiritual theme. Currently we are enjoying the series, The Chosen.
Community Action Team
Created as an avenue for practical outreach to help those in need and other organizations, the earliest projects of Community Action Team (CAT) included two trips to Joplin, MO to help with tornado clean-up, volunteering at the St. Louis FoodBank, buying books for children for Christmas, and street clean-up in St. Louis City.
Take Action Gathering
A consistent CAT activity has been the Take Action Gathering (TAG) that happens on the 5th Sunday after the church service. We have often created Blessing Bags filled with food and personal care items to hand out to people in need, and we gave bags to the Brentwood Fire and Police Dept to distribute too. We’ve also made sandwiches for the homeless and have written cards for seniors and others for Valentine’s Day.
Matthew 25 Fund
In keeping with our Covenant (being Christ-following and Jesus-patterned), we respond to Jesus’ explicit directions on how to love him through Matthew 25-fund activities that support the hungry, homeless, destitute, sick, and imprisoned. Throughout the New Testament, Jesus’ parables and stories paint a picture in which the poor and marginalized are lifted up and their needs are met, rather than being ignored or judged or despised.
From Matthew 25
I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you gave me clothing, I was sick and you took care of me, I was in prison and you visited me.’ Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when was it that we saw you hungry and gave you food or thirsty and gave you something to drink? And when was it that we saw you a stranger and welcomed you or naked and gave you clothing? And when was it that we saw you sick or in prison and visited you?’ And the king will answer them, ‘Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did it to me.
Ten percent of all monies we collect are automatically placed into the Matthew 25 Fund. Disbursements are confidential and based on our awareness of a need.
Food Pantry
We love our community! We know that from time to time, people may need help to meet daily needs, so we provide a free food pantry, stocked with canned goods, packaged food items, paper goods, and personal care items.
Access to the food panty is by appointment.
